About Upswing

Upswing creates extraordinary, contemporary circus that is diverse in its deepest sense – diverse in its artistic leadership and vision, diverse in the art forms it explores, and diverse in it’s reach and resonance.

Founded in 2004 by circus theatre director Vicki Amedume, Upswing is now at the forefront of contemporary circus in the UK and has produced several full length shows, large scale spectacles and unique participatory experiences blending artforms in innovative ways whilst building a solid network of associates, venues and trainees.

Upswing’s Vision

Upswing aspires to produce exceptional work that transforms the perception of contemporary circus into an art form that is diverse in its audience, ideology and practice.

We stimulate new thinking in Circus and challenge cultural assumptions by literally turning the world upside down, using the poetic potency of physical skill combined with risk to give a voice to ideas that words alone can’t.

An experimental company by nature, Upswing utilises physicality to explore themes of place, identity and our relationships with each other. We translate ideas using a circus language fused with text, dance and multimedia to create unique multidisciplinary work.

Our work is both topical and universal and our team driven by our shared ethos of respect, inclusion and innovation.

We are committed to equality of opportunity and encourage application from individuals currently underrepresented in the arts.
