Professional Training WAC Arts Partnership - Upswing
Upswing has a much valued and growing partnership with WAC Arts, a charity that engages diverse young people, often facing exceptional challenges, through creative arts and media programs. We now teach regularly on their Diploma training and have been active partners in the design and delivery in the Inflight program.
InFlight offered professional development for people already involved in physical sports or art forms who would like to expand their skill base and employability by training in aerial work. The aim was to remove barriers to access circus training, increase the diversity of performers in the industry and offer free high-quality training to aspiring artists.
Running part-time between April 2015 and July 2016, the project has provided participants with intensive training in trapeze, cocoon, silks and rope as well as harness techniques such as abseil and bungee harness. To marry all these skills, participants are also given an opportunity to take part in the InFlight final performance at the end of the program. The course is funded by Wac Arts and the Arts Council and delivered in partnership with Scarabeus and has provided training for 20 emerging and practicing artist.
The course culminated with the students working with theatre maker Leo Kay of Unfinished Business to create “Inflight from Home” a site-specific promenade performance shifting from intimate interactions and larger, image-based, physical spectacles that explored the nature of migration both intentional and forced.
